best way to accept major credit cards online?

hey guys, if i need to accept credit cards online through my site what would be the best way to do it? i'm knowledgeable with html/php/css/etc.., but i've never done anything like this before, and was wondering if anyone could guide me in the right direction. i'd rather not code my own system cause i don't feel too safe with other peoples numbers.

or even another website that would do this for me and take a small cut, i think that would be the easiest way, anyone know a reliable one? does paypal do that? or do they only accept paypal accounts?

thanks for you're help.

Answer
There are a number of different options for accepting credit cards online. Your payment processor and methods can be very important to your business' overall success so it's not a decision I would make lightly.

The most effective payment system in my opinion is to have a payment gateway setup for your business, this will basically allow customers to pay in a variety of ways and give the most overall flex-ability. For instance you could easily setup product links where the customer would like the link and pay directly from your gateway, or you could integrate a shopping cart into the process to easily handle customer orders. You can even manually key in a credit card if someone gives it over the phone or in-person.

All of this takes very little knowledge and requires no advanced programming skill, any good processor will set you up with a solution to help you achieve your desired results and most have an advanced gateway that will allow you to simply choose your options and insert an HTML/Java Script or something similar without doing much coding at all. It's really basic, in-fact I've worked with several business owners who had almost no computer knowledge and never had a website but could easily arrange online payments using the right system.

PayPal is a decent option, and to be honest it's always good to have a PayPal account for those people who are firm believers in there system. However they don't offer as much flex-ability, aren't as professional, and have a less than satisfactory rating with most business who use them for payment processing.

Remember in there system the buyer has all the protection and if you run a business' that is even slightly susceptible to fraud I would be very careful with PayPal.

Besides there poor fraud management and high target rate from scammers, they also have poor management solutions to handling client accounts. They often Lock, Freeze, or Close accounts that experience high volume or have had a few problems. Even if you've never had a dispute they might randomly lock your account for any number of reasons and hold on to your money for up to 6 months.

Anyway, before this becomes a novel I would suggest doing some research online regarding online merchant accounts. They sound like the perfect solution for you, and as a business owner myself I can personally recommend Prosper Merchant Services.

Even if you don't decide to process with them they have been very helpful to me and some of my clients and I'm sure they would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have.

Forgot to mention that all processors that allow you to accept credit cards will be taking a cut of your money, PayPal's fees are quite a bit higher than most since they aren't an official merchant provider... but you can expect rates from 2.5-3% on average for e-commerce. Even if you run a retail business and are setup with your local bank or something they will still be taking a cut, that's how they stay in business!
